Creating an AWS Account

Creation Date: November 16, 2023
Created By: Yeison Giraldo

1. To create a new AWS account, go to aws.amazon.com and choose Create an AWS Account.

To begin, select an email address and create an account name.

Thoughtfully decide on the email address you wish to utilize. If establishing a personal account, it's advisable to avoid using a work email, as job changes may occur. Conversely, for business accounts, it's recommended to employ an email alias that can be easily managed, considering potential changes in roles or companies.

After completing the email and account name fields, proceed to verify your email address. A verification code will be sent to your email. Enter the code and select the "Verify" option.

You will then be directed to a new screen where you can set up your root user password.

To create a new AWS account, go to aws.amazon.com and choose Create an AWS Account.

2. Step 1: Create your root user password.

The selected password is highly sensitive and should only be disclosed to individuals with access to the credit card associated with this account.

Ensure that your password incorporates uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and non-alphabetic characters.

After entering and confirming your password, proceed by selecting "Continue" (step 1 of 5).

Step 1: Create your root user password.

3. Step 2: Add contact information

On the following screen, make a choice between a business or personal account. While there's no distinction in functionality, there's a difference in the required information for billing purposes. Opt for a business account if available, providing a business-related phone number that can be reached in case the account creator is unavailable.

After determining the account type, complete the contact information for the account. Keep a record of these details in a secure location. In the event of losing access to your email or two-factor authentication device, AWS Support can use this information to verify your identity.

Upon completing the form, carefully review the terms of the AWS Customer Agreement at the end and mark the checkbox to accept them. Click "Continue" (step 2 of 5) to advance to the next screen.

Step 2: Add contact information

4. Step 3: Add a payment method

A temporary hold will be applied to the card. It's essential that the provided address matches the information your financial institution has on record for you or your business.

When you're prepared, select "Verify and Continue" (step 3 of 5) to move forward.

Step 3: Add a payment method

5. Step4: Confirm your identity

You have two options to verify your account: through a text message (SMS) or a phone call on the number linked to this account.

If you opt for the text message (SMS), you'll receive a numeric code. Enter this code on the next screen after selecting "Send SMS." Alternatively, for the Voice call option, a code will be displayed on the screen. Enter it when prompted by the automated voice verification system.

Enter the code according to your chosen verification method and then click "Continue" to move on to the final step.

Step4: Confirm your identity

6. Step 5:Select a support plan

You've got three support plan choices. The default one, called Basic Support, is free. If you're unsure, go with Basic Support – you can switch plans later.

For a detailed comparison of the tiers, check out "Compare AWS Support Plans."
